What is psyllium husk? Psyllium husk is used as herbal remedies since the ancient times, this plant belongs to a water-soluble class of fiber that is called mucilage. Basically, it used as aid for constipation diverticulosis, Crohn’s disease, diarrhea and other digestive problems. It helps absorb liquid in our intestine. It bloats and forms a stool that could be easy to pass. Psyllium husk also can lower cholesterol and control diabetes. This plant is high in fiber, the reason why it is most recommended for problems in our digestive track.
But like other laxatives, psyllium husk also has disadvantages. This includes diarrhea, bloating, gastrointestinal obstructions, and flatulence. Allergic reactions like problems on breathing, rash on skin, hives and anaphylaxis. A person that has a higher risk of developing allergic reaction on psyllium husk is those who are allergic to pollen and melon. It is always advised that you gradually increase the dose that you intake in psyllium husk so that your body could get used to the supplement. There are cases that psyllium husk users notice side effects, if this happens, discontinue using it and consult a physician.
The best way to prevent psyllium husk side effects is to drink lots of water. Take one full glass of water with psyllium and have at least 6-8 glasses after the consumption or as the doctor has advised. Lack of water intake may cause dehydration and intestinal problems.
Psyllium husk is not recommended for pregnant women and children. People with other medical complications should seek advice form a physician before taking psyllium husk.
